Steven Schuh, BA, CSAC

During the 20 years I have been practicing addiction therapy, I have seen tremendous and exciting changes in the field.   I am encouraged by the use of new medication to treat complications of craving and post acute withdrawal, the emergent field of addiction neurobiology and the new understandings of addiction as a brain disease.  The use of alternative therapies to augment traditional addiction treatment is finding more acceptance by consumers and the medical community.  These findings have infused my work and our field with renewed hope and focus.  The stigma of addiction, though still evident in our society, is now less prominent.  New changes in laws providing parity for mental illness and addiction are hopeful signs of greater acceptance and treatment of these disorders.

SERVICES OFFERED:

I offer a full array of addiction treatment services:  assessments and AODA (Alcohol and Other Drug) evaluations, individual, couples and family counseling, group facilitation (particularly Intensive Outpatient treatment for substance use disorders), consultation and supervision/training.  I have extensive experience in working with court-mandated patients as well as EAP (Employee Assistance Program) contacts.  I have worked in residential and inpatient treatment settings and understand how to navigate referrals to and from these settings.

SPECIALITY/EXPERTISE:

In addition to individual, couples and family counseling of addictions, I currently specialize in facilitation of Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment services.  I offer an holistic and integrated approach to treatment, utilizing both traditional and evidenced-based treatment modalities as well as alternative approaches to better treat the whole person - mentally, physically and spiritually. Family involvement is crucial for healing (and dramatically improves treatment outcomes) and is an important component of the IOP program.

I have advanced training in the treatment of Pathological Gambling and am experience in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing for treating addictions.  For those patients who wish to by-pass insurance reimbursed services, I also offer a discrete and confidential service dedicated to actually resolving the presenting problem versus merely declaring you “well” when your insurance runs out!

ACCREDITATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:

BA - Bachelor of Arts, University of Wisconsin, Madison,

CSAC - Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, Licensed by State of Wisconsin

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Level II (EMDR Institute, Inc.)

Pathological Gambling Level II (Wisconsin Counsel on Problem Gambling)

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL HISTORY:

Shortly after graduating with a Bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, I began working in alcohol and drug residential treatment where I became the assistant-director of treatment services for a 21 bed CBRF (Community Based Residential Facility) run by Catholic Charities in downtown Madison.  After that I began working in outpatient AODA treatment for University Health in Madison.  I entered the Masters in Counseling Psychology program at UW-Madison during that time and have completed 48 graduate degree credits in that program.

Eight years ago I moved back to my hometown of Sheboygan, WI, where I worked in both outpatient and inpatient settings at Aurora Memorial Medical Center.  I have been maintaining a private practice at West Grove Clinic since August, 2009.

FREE TIME/ENJOYMENT:

When not working, I maintain a busy family life.  I am an avid exerciser and enjoy road bicycling and motorcycling.  I have extensive training and teaching experience in the Marital Art of Aikido and am ranked in Katori Shinto Ryu sword arts.  I have been interested in mind/body healing arts since Graduate school and use mindfulness meditation in both my personal and professional lives.
